Please Note: Work location for this role is FLEXIBLE! This position allows 100% remote work from home or allows work to be performed in any of our major office locations with a hybrid schedule.
Profile Summary:
The successful candidate will be providing strategic leadership and vision to achieve its key business objectives. The candidate will be the accounting Subject Matter Expert for Voya’s General Account Investment Portfolio which is comprised of a highly diversified fixed income securities portfolio, complex derivatives, investments in partnerships, and commercial mortgage loans. The candidate will be responsible for ensuring adequate policies, procedures, controls, and staffing in place to facilitate accurate and timely reporting of investment results and compliance's with regulations. The candidate will provide leadership and guidance on day to day accounting matters, pricing and valuation of complex transactions, asset valuations, income recognition, impairments, investment analytics and commentary, SEC reporting, Statutory and regulatory reporting. Key participant in investment strategy setting including use of derivatives and hedging programs to mitigate market risk in Voya’s Asset/Liability mix, and implementation of accounting changes. Work closely with senior leadership team across all finance organization, business unit controllers, asset managers, and portfolio managers in providing guidance, direction and advice related to Investment needs.
Profile Description:
  • Lead and manage the investment accounting close process for fixed income securities, derivatives, equity securities, equity investments in limited partnerships, and commercial mortgage loans. Ensure proper accounting and reporting under both US GAAP basis and Statutory basis of accounting. Lead and oversee all internal and external investment reporting deliverables (e.g. 10-Q, 10-K), and Statutory reporting of all invested assets. Lead and oversees P&L production, market attributions, investment data validation, analytics and key drivers behind investment results for both USGAAP and Statutory accounting bases.
  • Lead and manage Voya’s general account investment valuation process and ensure controls are in place for accurate and timely reporting of investment valuations.
  • Lead and manage asset impairment analysis process, documentation and decisions. This involves extensive work with investment risk management team, asset managers, credit analysts, and portfolio management team.
  • Provide guidance on complex investment accounting and derivative transactions under applicable GAAP/SEC, Statutory, and Management accounting bases. This involves working with senior management across all finance business units by providing them with technical accounting research and necessary supporting documentation and analysis required in obtaining necessary approval, both internal and external prior to execution.
  • Publish USGAAP and Statutory accounting based internal monthly and quarterly financial packages focused on invested assets and hedging activities to stakeholders across the enterprise and external auditors. Provide detailed analysis and commentary on income variances and trends in invested assets.
  • Lead finance departmental efforts in analyzing new hedging programs with business units, risk management and external auditors. Develop derivative use strategies for new programs.
  • Ensure compliance with all aspects of Sarbanes-Oxley and Model Audit Rule, and coordination with Operational Risk Management, FCR and Internal Audit teams.
  • Implement and maintain effective control environment while enforcing the appropriate level of financial discipline within the staff and other departments.
  • Consult with asset and portfolio managers, business unit finance teams and US Finance Shared Services regarding accounting and financial reporting implications of proposed business plans for Proprietary Account assets. In addition, support external client asset management initiatives as directed.
  • Lead initiatives to evaluate current investment and derivative accounting systems capabilities and recommend future state design, and be the primary business driver in the implementation project.
  • Build organization capabilities to mitigate key personnel risks including succession planning for the Investment Controller-ship Organization.
  • Ongoing interaction with senior management throughout the organization to resolve issues related to investment products.
  • Collaborate with Head of Accounting Policy on all technical pronouncements impacting general account invested assets.
  • Key participant in organization wide efficiency initiatives related to investment activities.
Knowledge & Experience:
  • Degree in Accounting/Finance.
  • 15+ years of strong investment accounting and reporting experience under both US GAAP and Statutory accounting bases in a management leadership role.
  • Prior experience in developing Investment Forecasting models.
  • Be the subject matter expert on investment related matters involving day-to-day accounting, income recognition requirements, investment asset valuation, asset impairments, and cash-flow modelling for residential and commercial mortgage backed securities.
  • Strong understanding of derivative markets derivative products with respect to application in the insurance industry. Extensive derivative modeling experience both from technical product specification and market practice.
  • Ability to identify accounting issues impacting investment results and performance. Ability to analyze, interpret and communicate information to individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to successfully hire, retain, develop and coach staff at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong project management leadership skills. Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects in a time-sensitive environment, under pressure, while meeting deadlines. Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills with a collaborative style.
  • Executive presence, including excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proven track record of process enhancement.
  • Proven record of successful team management in a matrix environment
Colorado Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $125,070 to $171,970. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to the base salary, Voya offers incentive opportunities based on each role to reward achievement of annual performance objectives.
