This position is part of the Lifecycle Services (LCS) Engineering department with a primary function of supporting solution and concept development and cost estimation during pre and post-sale activities related to distribution center material handling equipment (MHE) design. Specifically this role is responsible for identifying Client and system requirements, evaluating and understanding operational and system flow, designing MHE solutions, and estimating design and system implementation costs. The Application Engineering is expected to understand distribution center operations, material handling equipment technology, and material handling industry control standards to support the required functions of the role. This role requires effective communication with key external and internal project stakeholders in sales and design positions. The Application Engineer will collaborate closely with LCS Mechanical, Electrical, and Controls Engineering teams during concept and estimation phases to align concepts and cost estimates with detail design standards.
  • Collaborating with LCS Sales to understand Client challenges and requirements to develop solution and concept designs.
  • Defining data requirements, gathering and validating information, applying judgment and statistical tests, and providing recommendations related to solution and concept development.
  • Understanding MHE technology, functionality, industry standard implementation and installation process and practice.
  • Following Fortna design standards and processes and understanding Fortna Product capabilities and requirements.
  • Ability to visualize and define existing system modifications and enhancements to develop solution and concepts.
  • Reviewing and evaluating drawings, specifications, and other deliverables to ascertain necessary take-offs.
  • Identifying key scope requirements, documenting, and communicating requirements and intent with supplier partners providing equipment and service quotes.
  • Estimating equipment, professional services, and supplier partner services required to implement turnkey solutions and concepts.
  • Estimating/Validating (a) Capital Budget Estimates and (b) Contract Estimates for material handling system projects that are completed in a timely and accurate fashion.
  • Validating supplier partner proposals (equipment and services) against requirements and scope requests.
  • Consulting with Fortna Associates to discuss and formulate estimates.
  • Establishing and maintaining cost libraries and databases.
  • Identifying, developing and creating opportunities for process and system improvements to maximize accuracy and efficiency.
  • Contributing to the creation of an estimating training program for Fortna Associates.
  • Supporting tool development to optimize standard costs and estimating practices.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or relevant discipline
  • 5 - 7 years of experience in consulting design or engineering experience in supply chain logistics or Materials Handling Systems and Conveyor Systems Integration
  • Comprehensive understanding of mechanical, electrical, and controls engineering functions and interdependencies related to MHE system design
  • Understanding of MHE functionality, technology, and application capabilities
  • Demonstrated 3 to 5 years of experience in Sales Engineering or estimating
  • Ability to communicate and articulate detailed design concepts at appropriate level to broad audiences with diverse technical backgrounds (Executive, Finance, Operations, IT)
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, time management and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally in the range of 30 – 40% of the time
  • Ability to perform essential functions of the job
  • Strong math and analytical skills, as well as an eye for detail
  • Experience with Microsoft Office including PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and Excel (understanding of macros, formulae’s, lookup functions, charting, and database functions within Excel a plus)
  • Ability to flow chart and document processes
  • Ability to facilitate meetings and drive meetings to be timely and comprehensive
  • Ability to compose reports, meeting minutes, corrective actions notices, and interoffice memos
  • Ability to work flexible schedule
  • Good understanding of Project Management fundamentals (i.e., the relationship of scope, cost, and time)

  • Being a licensed Professional Engineer
  • Familiar with electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical installation standards
  • Experience with presenting data analyses to senior decision-makers
  • Knowledge of industry trends, cost shifts, fuel, steel, and cooper surcharges, currency rates with major suppliers and Clients outside the US
  • Bilingual, English/Spanish
