OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES: Serve in a leadership role, managing and supervising attorneys and legal professionals in the Atlanta office of MagMutual’s in-house law firm, which provides regulatory and trial defense to healthcare providers and entities. Make employment decisions and handle performance management. Develop, train, and coach employees and demonstrate valuable leadership competencies such as promoting diversity and inclusion. Guide attorneys and legal professionals through the ethical practice of law. Directly represent healthcare providers and entities during litigation, at trial, and before medical boards.SPECIFIC DUTIES :

  • Manage Atlanta office of MagMutual’s in-house law firm.
  • Directly represent health care professionals in medical malpractice and state board licensing/credentialing matters.
  • Delegate and assign legal work to junior attorneys and legal professionals, while retaining ultimate responsibility for the completion of all necessary legal work on cases referred to the office.
  • Manage office’s employment needs and conduct performance reviews of attorneys and legal professionals.
  • Ensure all legal work meets the highest legal standards, conforms with state rules, and complies with internal guidelines.
  • Supervise and coach junior attorneys and legal professionals to ensure proper handling of cases referred to the office.
  • Promote a client-driven, service-centered, and trial-focused approach to the practice of law.
  • Handle all aspects of litigation/trial work, including court appearances and jury trials.
  • Handle all aspects of discovery, including taking depositions and preparing witnesses for deposition.
  • Handle all aspects of settlement, including mediations.
  • Provide legal opinions to claims professionals.
  • Prepare and submit timely reports to claims professionals on all significant case activities.
  • Adhere to MagMutual’s defense guidelines as they apply to the in-house law firm.
  • Ensure all files are properly documented and organized and that access to and/or the sharing of confidential information is properly restricted.
  • Assist with conflict-of-interest issues as needed.
  • Utilize case management software for maintaining notes, diary, calendar, etc., on cases assigned to the office in accordance with established operating guidelines and procedures.
  • Attend continuing education seminars and courses to enhance medical, insurance, regulatory, and legal knowledge.
  • Research and maintain up-to-date knowledge of statutes, case law, and industry trends applicable to medical professional liability.
  • Advise in-house law firm administrators on resource needs and allocation.
  • Lead committees as assigned by law firm administrators.
  • Travel as case needs dictate, potentially on short notice.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • A minimum of 10 to15 years of litigation and trial experience with an emphasis on medical malpractice claims.
  • Significant first-chair trial experience.
  • Experience handling insurance defense work preferred.
  • Experience handling state board licensing and credentialing matters preferred.
  • Experience handling high impact cases from beginning to end, including negotiation of settlements.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to project a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Ability to properly handle confidential information.
  • Ability to multitask, manage priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to make decisions strategically.
  • Ability to lead, coach, and mentor.
  • Flexibility to travel as needed. Must have a valid driver's license.
  • J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Must be a current member of the Bar in the State where practicing and maintain necessary licensing and continuing education requirements throughout employment.
