Habitat for Humanity International is currently seeking a Sr. Specialist of Public and Media Relations, who will execute Habitat for Humanity’s public relations and media strategies and tactics, with a primary focus on national media. This position is responsible for conducting proactive media outreach to generate high-quality, prominent news coverage about Habitat’s programs, events, campaigns and initiatives; coordinating media requests and preparing interview materials for senior leadership; drafting media materials such as press releases, media alerts, contributed articles, fact sheets, and talking points; providing media and public relations counsel to Habitat affiliates as necessary and requested; monitoring Habitat’s media coverage and providing recommendations and analysis based on the coverage; and providing general support to the PR and Media Relations team. The Sr. Specialist will also play a lead role in supporting the PR strategies for major advocacy, subsidiary, and program-related campaigns and initiatives, such as the Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter, Cost of Home, and Habitat AmeriCorps. The Sr. Specialist is responsible for identifying and pursuing media opportunities that will help establish Habitat as a prominent thought leader on affordable housing, strengthen the integration of advocacy and innovation into Habitat’s media profile, and raise Habitat’s visibility and influence.

This position will be based at our Administrative headquarters located in Atlanta, GA. and requires up to 10% travel.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Identify proactive media opportunities and conduct media outreach that can generate high-quality, prominent media coverage for Habitat and its key messages.
  • Draft media materials such as press releases, media advisories, fact sheets, talking points and other content.
  • Manage and coordinate responses for media; draft interview prep materials and talking points; provide senior leadership with media training as needed.
  • Provide crisis communications and media relations counsel to Habitat affiliates as necessary or requested. This includes creating a communications plan, drafting messaging and talking points, and providing media training to affiliate spokespeople.
  • Lead and support PR and media relations for major Habitat for Humanity initiatives and campaigns.
  • Provide media training and consulting to senior leadership, subject matter experts, and affiliate leadership.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Pursuant to current HFHI policy, this position requires full vaccination against COVID-19, except to the extent such requirement is prohibited by applicable law.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • At least 5 years of directly related professional experience; experience with nonprofit/philanthropy media or journalism/PR agency background preferred.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively within a team and cross-departmentally.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. media, with proven track record of placements in top news media.
  • History of successfully implementing public relations campaigns and initiatives.
  • Thorough knowledge of current and emerging public relations issues and trends; proven experience with providing effective counsel on media and public relations topics.
  • Outstanding written and oral communications skills, with mastery of AP Style.
