GDITs Federal Health Sector is currently looking for a Public Health Communications Specialist to join our team in support of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – Joint Information Center (JIC). The CDC activated its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to lead the novel coronavirus (COVID19) response. The Joint Information Center (JIC) and the various Task Forces (TFs) supporting the response require a variety of health communication support to carry out critical functions to continue to support this response. This position is for full time employment and will eventually be located onsite at the customer’s location in Atlanta, Georgia. (CDC’s domestic facilities are currently operating under “maximum telework” due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This position will be 100% work from home until CDC’s facilities begin to resume normal operations.)

CDC’s JIC is a 24/7 emergency communication unit that serves as the primary point of information coordination during a CDC Incident Management System (IMS) activation. The JIC is primarily staffed by a network of emergency communicators who ensure that accurate health protection information is quickly shared with multiple audiences through many channels during a public health emergency.

RESPONSIBILITIESIn this role you will work on a wide range of tasks as part of a multidisciplinary team to develop health communication content. You will work with design templates available through CDC, and coordinate with the JIC Web Team and Usability Specialists to publish cleared content to provide health communication support to create integrated public health messages and content for multiple audiences. Health Communication responsibilities include:
  • Develop and update website content with material from subject-matter experts, team and task force members. Ensure all content is up-to-date, designed for digital use, evaluation, etc.
  • Use relevant health communication, risk and crisis communication, behavior change and risk and crisis communication best practices to consistently develop content and products that achieve the intended audience communication objectives such as but not limited to web pages, key/talking points, fact sheets, presentations, FAQ documents, etc.
  • Translate technical and scientific subject matter into plain language communication projects
  • Develop communication materials and education/materials and activities related to COVID-19 topics, including infectious diseases, outbreaks and/or emergency response.
  • Coordinate pre-clearance and manage additional clearance levels as appropriate to ensure final JIC clearance prior to dissemination.
  • Ensure material meets 508 standards.
  • Attend all JIC and other response meetings to maintain and share situational awareness.
  • Liaise and coordinate across the response as needed by
    • Working with CDC-Info and others to review materials and responses
    • Engage with Task Force leadership, subject matter experts and other colleagues to develop critical public health communication content and messaging, as needed.
    • Coordinating Onboarding / Offboarding Staff
    • Reminder emails to update slides for meeting; Collecting Meeting priorities and posting the listing;
    • Adding user to CHEO standing meetings
    • Advancing slides during CHEO all members meetings

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelors degree in a related field such as: Communications (journalism, advertising, public relations); or English (writing/editing, rhetoric); or Public Health
  • Three to Six years of related experience

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Understanding of basic risk communication principles (giving clear and simple communication during an emergency, providing actionable information)
  • Experience writing, editing and reviewing health communication materials for the consumer audience
  • Strong proofreading skills and attention to detail
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Self-sufficient (needs little supervision)
  • Ability to identify gaps in existing resources
  • Experience in facilitating quick turnaround for complex documents
  • Experience in the use of MS Teams, Sharepoint, and MicroSoft Office software
  • Ability to communicate across multi-disciplinary teams
  • Previous CDC and or public health experience highly desirable
  • Previous experience in emergency response highly desirable
  • Superior multi-tasking and organization skills. Ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects and prioritize assignments and tasks accordingly, remaining flexible to changing priorities and new initiatives.
  • This position requires being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by January 18, 2022 or the start date, if after January 18. Individuals who work in or reside in Texas or Montana or work outside of the United States may be excluded from this requirement.
  • Analyze organizational goals and objectives, operating environment and business processes to determine most efficient methods of accomplishing work
